Common questions about Backtester

Is Backtester really free?

Yes. Backtester is completely free with no paywalls, subscriptions, or premium tiers.

Do I need to create an account?

No account needed. Everything runs locally in your browser — no sign-up, no login, no personal data collected.

Where is my trade data stored?

All trade data is stored locally in your browser's IndexedDB. Nothing is uploaded to any server. You can export your journal as a JSON file for backup at any time.

Which browsers are supported?

Backtester works on any Chromium-based browser: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Arc.

Does it work with all TradingView markets?

Yes. Backtester works on any TradingView chart — stocks, forex, crypto, indices, and commodities.

Can I export my trade journal?

Yes. You can export your entire journal as a JSON file from the Settings tab of the dashboard. Import works as a merge — existing data is never overwritten.

Does Backtester work with TradingView's replay mode?

Yes. Use TradingView's bar replay mode — the widget works the same way. Just double-click to open a position dialog and the data will auto-fill.

What stats does the dashboard track?

The dashboard tracks total trades, win rate, profit factor, gross wins/losses, net P&L, average win/loss, expectancy, max win/loss streaks, best/worst result, average R:R, average SL/TP pips, spread hours and outside-trading-hours counts, max drawdown, average drawdown, and recovery factor. It also includes a backtest calendar heatmap and achievement system.

What are trade groups?

Trade groups are like folders or strategies. You organize your trades into named groups (e.g. "Gold Strategy", "EURUSD Scalping") with custom icons and colors. Each group has its own initial account size for drawdown calculations.

How is this different from a spreadsheet trading log?

No manual typing. Backtester auto-fills entry, stop loss, target, and captures screenshots — replacing Excel with a proper trading journal.

Can I customize the widget?

Yes. The widget has 11 themes (Default, Midnight, Synthwave, Forest, Frosted, Light, Mint, Coffee, Citrus, Crimson, Ember, Dusk), a compact and super-compact mode, and a draggable interface with saved position.
